Los Angeles Times – April 22, 1904:

M. E. COPELAND DEAD

Resident of Los Angeles Over Score of Years and Echo Park Foreman

Matthew E. Copeland died at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, after an illness of several months, the last three of which he was confined to his bed. His death was caused by tuberculosis of the bowels.

Mr. Copeland was in his fifty-fifth year, and was born at Houston, Tenn., where his early life was spent. When a young man he went to Colorado, and settled at Silverton. For several years he was the postmaster at Silverton, and later was elected County Clerk and Recorder.

At Silverton in the year 1880 he married Miss Rilda M. Puckett, and to them was born two children, M. Adelbert, who is now in the United States Navy, being assigned to the "Wisconsin," at present at Hongkong; and Osa who is with her mother in the home on Angeleno Heights.

The Copelands moved to Los Angeles twenty-two years ago, and for many years made their home at No. 1112 Court street. Only three months ago Mr. Copeland completed a beautiful residence on one of the high hills of Angeleno Heights, and the family had just occupied it when he was forced to take to his bed.

About nine years ago Mr. Copeland realized that his health would no longer allow his following indoor occupations, and he decided to take up a life in the open air. He was appointed foreman of the then comparatively new Echo Park, and ever since that time he faithfully filled that position, bringing the park up to a state of beauty and great attractiveness.

He became a Mason early in life, and was a member of the Pentalpha Lodge of this city. His religious affiliations were with the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the further particulars being announced in the death columns of The Times. The Masons will participate in the services, and the employés of the city parks will be in attendance. The interment will be at Rosedale Cemetery.
