Nathaniel Allen

U.S. Congressman. He was a successful blacksmith, served as an officer in the New York Militia and was postmaster of Honeoye Falls, in 1811. He was commissioner and paymaster on the Niagara Frontier during the War of 1812, a member of the New York State Assembly in 1812 and Sheriff of Ontario County, (1815-19). In 1819, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth Congress, serving until 1821. Not a candidate for reelection, he town supervisor of Richmond, New York, (1824-26) and engaged in the prosecution of claims for money due in connection with the Louisville and Portland Canal construction. He died suddenly at age 52 while on a business trip to Kentucky. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
