Pvt. Chester J. Betley, U.S.M.C., died in action at Iwo Jima, March 2, 1945, beloved son of Frank and Sophie, nee Myrda, loving brother of Richard, Bernice and Dolores, fond grandson of Albert and Angeline Betley, of Sobieski, Wis. Remains will arrive Monday, 2 p.m. Funeral Wednesday, 9:30 a.m., from chapel, 1006 N. Western avenue, to St. Mark's church. Interment St. Adalbert's cemetery. Military honors by Edward Chorazak Post.

US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II
Chester John Betley entered the Marine Corps 27 June 1944 from Chicago Illinois. Completed recruit training 5th Recruit Training Battalion MCB San Diego. August 1944 assigned 7th Training Battalion 2nd Infantry Training Regiment MCB Camp Pendleton CA. Trained and qualified as Scout Sniper (MOS 761).
11 November 1944 assigned 27th Replacement Draft. 23 November 1944 embarked USAT Kota Agoeng San Diego debarked 2 December 1944 Hilo, Hawaii. Attached to Service Troops, 5th Marine Division.
27 December 1944 embarked USS Athene (AKA-22) at Hilo. January 1945 left Pearl Harbor for invasion of Iwo Jima. Interim stop at Saipan before D-Day at Iwo Jima 19 February 1944. Served as member of the USS Athene's ships platoon loading and unloading cargo until the ship was unloaded during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
1 March 1945 sent ashore assigned as an infantry replacement in 26th Marines 5th Marine Division. Participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 2 March 1945.
Initially buried 5th Marine Division Cemetery Iwo Jima.
1948 Returned to US for permanent burial Niles Illinois.
