Helen Luella (Evans) Thompson, 82, of 1136 Michigan Avenue, Benzonia, Michigan, walked on to Heaven at 10:45pm, December 1, 2008, from the comfort of her home,
while in the presence of her only son, Steven and daughter-in-law, Diane, who had been living with & caring for her since August.

Born May 18,1926, at a home on Corwin Street in Circleville, Ohio, she was the daughter of Walter H. Evans and Garnet L. (Ramsey) Evans.

Helen attended Circleville High School and graduated in 1944.
That same year, she eloped with Army/Air Corp soldier, Everett (Tommy) Thompson, and they were married in Bakersfield,California on July 24th, spending the next 42 years together until his death in 1987.

Helen, along with her husband, owned & operated Thompson's Fine Food Restaurant on U.S.23 in Circleville from 1956 to 1966. They opened Circleville's first fast food restaurant, Burger Chef on West Main Street in May,1966, and along with other business partners, had 10 Burger Chefs and 12 KFCs in Ohio & Indiana until their retirement in February, 1972. For the next several years, she was the Executive Director of the Pickaway County Clothing Center, which she helped to start, and was involved in other community volunteer work as well.

During her years in Circleville, she was a member of Community United Methodist Church and sang in the Choir. Upon becoming a Christian, she did her best to follow the teachings of her Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ for the remainder of her years, personally touching many lives with her love & compassion. She was a recipient of the Columbus Dispatch Distinguished Service Award, Ohio Health Care Association 1989 Better Life Award, and has a photo published in The International Library of Photography called "Beauty Of The Heavens."

After moving to Benzonia, Michigan to be close to her son and grandchildren, she did an intensive study on the Cannabis plant and recognized the fact that it was created by God as a gift to the human race for everything that they would ever need. Upon discovering this, she became a member of NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), Michigan NORML,and Benzie County NORML. On her 80th birthday, May 18th,2006, she
was recognized as NORML's oldest living member, and was instrumental in helping to pass the Michigan Medical Marijuana Initiative, Proposal 1, on November 4,2008.

She was also a gifted artist, enjoying the beauty of Northern Michigan with her family & friends.

She is survived by her son, Rev. Steven B. (Diane) Thompson of Benzonia, Michigan.
Grandsons are Michael (Jeri) Thompson of Benzonia, Michigan, Matthew Thompson (and fiancee,Jenn) of Manistee, Michigan, Chris R. Thompson of Manistee,Michigan, and Steven (Nakia) Souders of Fresno,California.
Granddaughters are Sarah (Miguel) Avalos of Benzonia, Michigan and Mary (Carlos) Zamora of Leelanau, Michigan. Twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great
Her only sister, Emma Leasure of Circleville, Ohio.
Her dog, Rusty who gave her great comfort to the end.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett (Tommy) Thompson, and parents, Walter & Garnet Evans.

At her request, she has been cremated by Oak Grove Cremation Center.
There will be no funeral service, however, there will be a "Celebration of Helen's Life" on May 18, 2009, at Brookside Inn in Beulah, Michigan at 2pm, with her son, Steven and her friend, Mary Robling, officiating.

Her graveside service will be held on May 27,2009, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Chillicothe, Ohio at 2pm, with her
son, Steven officiating.
