John W. Scott, a well to do farmer residing five and a half miles north of Elwood, died about 6 o'clock this morning of apoplexy. He was a native of Wayne county, but had lived north of Elwood for many years, enjoying a wide acquaintance. Mr. Scott was in his seventieth year, and leaves a wife and one grown son. The funeral will be held at the family residence Sunday and interment will be in the city cemetrey. (Elwood Daily Record, December 5, 1902.)
Mr. Scott was a veteran of the Civil War. He mustered into the 16th Indiana Volunteer Infantry on August 16, 1862 and mustered out on Jule 30, 1965.
