Mary Jane Alford Robinson
Mary Jane died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at her home in Baton Rouge. Born March 8, 1913, she was the last survivor of the generation of children of brothers S.F. and C.E. Alford, who grew up on Hopedale Plantation in the Mississippi Delta during the first half of the 20th century. She was a resident of New Roads from 1945 to 2001, and was employed by the Pointe Coupee Parish Library for 51 years, where three generations of many families were part of her story hour following.
She is survived by two sons, Oliver Sims "Pop" Robinson III, of Baton Rouge, and Floyd Alford "Al" Robinson, of Houston; seven grandchildren, Oliver Alford Robinson, Dallas, Charles Foster Robinson, Colorado, Mark Alford Robinson, Zachary, John Gray Robinson, Pensacola, Fla., Janie Robinson Russo, Port Barre, Pattie Robinson Williams, Tyler, Texas, and Elizabeth Robinson Workman, Waco, Texas; nine great-grandchildren, Anna Russo Bourgeois and Sarah Russo, Alexander Williams, Luke Alford Robinson, James Leland Robinson, Mattie Grace, Emily Workman, Trev Gray and Marcus Emile Robinson, of Baton Rouge; as well as a niece and nephew, Elise Cook and C.E. Alford III, of Rolling Fork, Miss.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Sims Robinson Jr.; a son, Charles Edward "Ted" Robinson; parents, Teddie Biggs Alford and Cincinnatus Eudoxus Alford Sr.; and a brother, C.E. Alford Jr. Visiting at First United Methodist Church, New Roads, on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 1 p.m. until service at 2 p.m. Interment in False River Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pointe Coupee Parish Library.
