David served as a Lt. Colonel, 2nd Delaware Infantry during the war.

He was appointed a Captain of Company A, 2nd Delaware Infantry during it's formation in 1861.

During the Antietam Campaign he was in command of the Regiment as senior officer present.

Sometime after Antietam he was promoted to the rank of Major, and by the Battle of Chancellorsville (May 1863) he had been promoted to a Lieutenant Colonel and in was in command of the 2nd Delaware.

He was wounded in action at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863. He returned to service after healing.

David was "Killed In Action" at Spottsylvania Courthouse, Virginia during the war.
