Jacob Long STEP FATHER
On September 30, 1861 at the age of 24, he enlisted as a Private in the 59th Ohio Infantry, Company E. Three of his first cousins, brothers George W. & John M. Ferree & Shadrach M. Ferree all fought with the same exact company & unit! Two of the four of them did NOT survive the war! On March 3, 1863 his rank was listed as Sergeant on the draft registration. On an official roster his rank in and out were listed as Private. Carey died of disease in a hospital in McMinnville, Tennessee, and was reinterred at Stones River National Cemetery. His cousin, John M. Ferree, kept a diary during the war, and mentions Carey several times. He refers to him as "DR." Westerfield. Here are three diary entries:
Tuesday, April 7, 1863
"This morning still at the 2nd Regiment OVI... I purchased a few necessary articles that I wanted and went to Murfeesboro. From there to the hospital where Dr. C.A. Westerfield was. From there to camp." John's brother, Richard L. Ferree, was in the 2nd Ohio. John had a pass to visit him.
Thursday, April 23, 1863
"This morning the Regiment starts out on an expedition with 5 days rations. I was detailed as a medic in the hospital. Dr. Westerfield quite sick. I received a letter today from Louis."
Monday April 27, 1863.
"This morning Dr. Westerfield is better than he has been since he has been sick. No excitement in camp whatever. Quite warm and looks like rain."
