| Birth: | Dec. 21, 1918 | | Death: | Jun. 10, 2003 |  U.S. government official. He served as President Reagan's Treasury secretary and also his chief of staff. An officer in the Marines during World War II, he became the CEO of the giant brokerage firm Merrill Lynch before accepting the post of Treasury secretary in 1981. Then, in a famous job switch, he swapped places with James A. Baker III to become Reagan's chief of staff in 1985. He was forced to resign in 1987 because of the Iran-Contra scandal. The following year he published a tell-all biography in which he revealed that first lady Nancy Reagan regularly consulted an astrologer.
