Orva J. Bender 1927-1994
Orva J. Bender, 67, of Montezuma, formerly of Kalona and Iowa City, died Friday, October 14, 1994, at Grinnell Hospital, Grinnell, following a lengthy illness.
Graveside services were 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 19, in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City, with the Rev. Robert Barrick, pastor, Sharon Center United Methodist Church, officiating.
Born June 11, 1927, in Shipshewana, Indiana, he was the son of Henry J. and Polly (Jones) Bender, and married Arlene Brenneman May 8, 1948, in Iowa City.
Mr. Bender was a lumber salesman at Kalona Builders for a number of years until retirement. He also had been a farmer and a machine shop mechanic.
He was a member of the Sharon Center United Methodist Church and had been a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda Kay Brookhart, Portland, Oregon; one brother, Gideon Bender, Ruskin, Florida; two granddaughters, Melissa Brookhart, Kalona, and Sharon Brookhart, Portland and one great-grandson, Cody Knerr, Kalona.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1984, six brothers and three sisters.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
