Gladys Faye Hancock was born February 15, 1909. She was the daughter of Claude Archibald and Minnie Inez Ostermeier Hancock. She lived in Hancock County all of her life. She graduated from Mt Comfort High School in 1926. Then she attended Indiana Central CollegeUniversity to get her teaching degree. After college she immediately started teaching at Mt Comfort School then went to Mt. Vernon High School, after the consolidation. Through all of her years she taught Latin and Math. She was truly dedicated to her students. She retired from teaching in 1974 after 44 years. She would have kept teaching for longer but she was needed at home to care for her father. Gladys was very family oriented and proud of her heritage. She was married to Donald Lee Shumway for 17 years until his death in 1967. Gladys and Don never had any children of their own but in her eyes she had many. Gladys was my great aunt.
