PROPHETSTOWN - Billy F. Morphew, 83, of rural Prophetstown, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his family. He farmed the family farm for nearly 70 years, and was a tool and die maker at John Deere/Harvester, East Moline, for 22 years.
He was born Sept. 10, 1927, in Ochelata, Okla., the son of James R. and Lucille (Nickels) Morphew. He was united in marriage to Mary Emmitt on Jan. 29, 1950, at Rock Falls United Methodist Church. Billy was a proud veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Marine Corps.
He was a member of the Prophetstown American Legion and Prophetstown United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed wood-working, especially making children's toys and furniture. Billy loved animals, and was active with his children in the 4-H and FFA Programs while they were growing up. He counted the offering at the church, and enjoyed making cookies for the church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary of Prophetstown; his children, Barry (Jo Ellen) Morphew, Rita (Bud) Osborn and Janie Morphew, all of Prophetstown, Christy (Ric) Nickerson of Mesa, Ariz., Fay (Randy) Requet of Peoria, Ariz., and Billie Jo (David) Pickering of Roscoe; 10 grandchildren, Carrie, Daniel, Eric, Eran, Evan, Emily, Shawn, Christopher, Alexa and Nicholas; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Don (Barbara) Morphew of Cordova.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph; and a sister, Juanita.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11:30 a.m., Monday at Prophetstown United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Thomas Moe, pastor, officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown. Arrangements were completed by McDonald Funeral Home, Prophetstown.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
