Newspaper Columnist, Author

In 1922, Miss La Ganke became editor of the Home Economics department of the Plain Dealer Newspaper in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to the appointment, she had studied home economics at Pratt Institute and Columbia University. She also studied at the Western Reserve University where she also taught a class on household administration. Although she was well known in the Cleveland area, her national exposure occurred when her column about Nancy Page began to be printed in papers across the United States in February of 1927. In the first few years, the column focused on child raising, house cleaning and other day to day activities a homemaker might find useful. In the early 1930's, quilting was becoming very popular with women in the United States and thus, Miss. La Ganke, added Nancy Page's Tuesday Quilt Club to her daily articles. Every Tuesday, a new quilt block pattern would be printed. Many of the quilt series that she created were twelve to fifteen blocks in length. The Nancy Page column ran from 1927 until the early 1940's when World War II started. After the War, the company that had once printed her columns no longer printed them. She also wrote and co-wrote cook books including "Food ‘n' Fun for the Invalid", "Pies a Plenty" and "Flavor's the thing". She also wrote home economics' books including "Everywoman's complete guide to homemaking". In 2007, Quilt in a Day, compiled and published "Magic Vine Quilt", which is based off of one of Mrs. Harris', Nancy Page series from the 1930's.
