She was the wife of General Daniel "Chappie" James, Jr., the first African-American in the U.S. to attain the rank of four star general (USAF) . Mrs. James helped her husband overcome racism in the military and reach once unattainable heights. She took piano lessons from the daughter of Booker T. Washington (Mrs. Portia Marshall Washington-Pittman) at the Tuskegee Institute . According to her son, Lieutenant General Daniel James III, she taught her children the value of education, preparation and persistence .
