James W. Porter was born April 8, 1834 in Vinton county, Ohio, and died May 23, 1921, in Humeston, Iowa, at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 15 days.

Mr. Porter was married to Nancy Jane Albin, of Vinton county, Ohio, in December, 1858. To this union were born 6 children, three of whom survive him: Ira J., Harvey and Mrs. Clara McKinley, all of this vicinity.

In the fall of 1865 Mr. Porter journeyed to Iowa from Ohio with his family by wagon and settled on the farm on which his son, Harvey, now resides. Twenty-nine years ago he quit the farm and moved onto the property in which he died, and in which his wife also died eight years ago.

For several months Mr. Porter had been a paralytic sufferer and he suffered intensely for the last three months of his life, but through it all he was patient and uncomplaining.

The funeral services were conducted at the home of Rev. J. D. Pontius, of the Christian church. The body was laid to rest beside the wife in the Humeston cemetery.
