He attended schools in Paris through the 11th grade and finished at the Marion Institute, Marion, AL, in preparation for West Point, from which he graduated as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in 1929. He married Marjorie Marie Hetland of San Francisco on February 23, 1940, in Bradford, McKean County, PA. Wright, a direct descendant of George W. Wright, 'Father of Paris,' built his life around the values learned as a youth in Paris and the ideals of 'Duty, Honor and Coountry' from his West Point years.
During WORLD WAR II he fought the Japanese invasion of the Philippines on Bataan, eluded capture and became an American guerrilla, resisting the Japanese occupation. In 1944 and 1945, he led a guerrilla force to assist the American invasion to liberate the Philippines. He was decorated with the Legion of Merit for meritorious achievement, the Silver Star for valor and the PURPLE HEART for wounds received in combat. He completed a 30-year military career as the assistant division commander of the 4th Infantry Division in 1959.
For the next 17 years, Wright was manager for security and safety of the Varian Associates, a major defense firm in Palo Alto, CA. In 1977, he and his wife Marjorie retired to Paris, where he occupied his time as the class leader of the seniors Bible study group at Central Presbyterian Church. His final duty was to bid farewell to his wife, who passed away a week before him on February 13, 1997.
