Scholar and author. The son of actress, Norma Shearer, and producer, Irving Thalberg, he received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1960, and subsequently taught philosophy at Oberlin College from 1960 to 1963, and at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1965 until his death. He was the author of three books (including a 95-volume work, "Enigmas of Agency: Studies in the Philosophy of Human Action") and numerous articles, his essays appearing in many journals and philosophical anthologies.
