He was the Chief Signal Officer of 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. He fought by the side of Stonewall Jackson, and was one of those who bore the great captain from the field when he received the wound that caused his death.

The Wilbourn Cemetery southwest of Bryant is located on Corps of Engineer land north of Grenada lake. This cemetery is in the woods, one fourth mile off of a gravel road with no road or trail to it.

Exit I-55 five miles north of Grenada at Exit 211, (Coffeeville, State Highway 7 Exit). Go northeast toward Coffeeville on Highway 7 for 5.8 miles. Turn right onto County Road 73 (gravel) at the Torrance Landing sign. Go 1.5 miles and turn left onto County Road 85. Go exactly .5 (one half) mile on County Road 85 and stop just past the crest of a low ridge. The cemetery is 180 degrees (south) at 0.23 mile from this point. If you follow the low ridge that you just crossed south for one fourth mile it will lead you to the cemetery. The cemetery is slightly to the right side of the ridge. The cemetery is located near the site of the pre-civil war home of William Brooke Wilbourn called "Midway." There is no sign of the house, although it was probably on the ridge north of the cemetery.

If you have a GPS the coordinates are: 335326N 0894423W (degrees, minutes and seconds) Its near the center of Section 2, Township 23N, Range 5E
