He is a founder of the St. Peter Lutheran church. A church council was formed consisting of Herman Wessels, chairman; Emil Flath, secretary; John Freudenberg, John Kirchhofer, and John Schroeder as council members. The constitution established the offices of chairman and secretary and the other members of the council acted in the capacity of “collectors”. This council was instrumental in formulating and writing a constitution which was first written in German and later translated into English in 1952 by Pastor Raymond Durst with help from Adolph Wessels. The congregation was officially named St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Prairie Valley. It was affiliated with the Texas Synod in 1939. This lasted until 1943 when it changed to the Iowa Synod.
