Death: Nov. 5, 1989

Murder Victim. She and her husband, Dan Broderick, were murdered by his ex-wife, Betty, following an extremely bitter divorce in what became a high profile case. Dan was a college senior at Notre Dame in pre-med, when he met Elizabeth "Betty" Anne Bisceglia, a Freshman. They dated for the next three years, while Dan attended the Cornell Medical College, and were married on April 12, 1969. While into his residency, Dan decided to change careers, and enrolled in Harvard Law School, intent upon becoming a medical malpractice lawyer. Betty took odd jobs to pay the rent while Dan studied. Dan, always a fashionable dresser, became known on campus as "Dapper Dan" while Betty always wore older, second hand clothing. Dan's first job was in San Diego, where he quickly became a successful attorney, while Betty became a real estate salesperson. They had four children, Kimberly, Lee, Danny Jr, and Rhett. As Dan became more successful, earning up to $2 million a year, he stayed at work more and more, leaving Betty to raise the children alone. In 1983, he hired Linda Kolkena, a pretty, 21 year old former airline stewardess, as his personal assistant (he was 39), and soon began an affair with her. By 1985, he had decided on a divorce, and he and Betty legally separated, with her moving with the kids to another house. He paid her $9,000 a month in alimony and child support, but she began to break into their house and vandalize it, not once, but several times. He retaliated by obtaining restraining orders each time, and Betty was jailed twice for violating the restraining orders. In 1986, Linda and Dan moved to another house, and sold the original house, giving half of the sale price to Betty. Betty retaliated by driving her SUV through the front door of their new house, for which she spent 3 days in a mental hospital. They were finally divorced on January 30, 1989, where Dan's legal team blocked all of her legal motions, and she received $30,000 lump sum, and $9,000 monthly in alimony (she had sought $1,000,000 lump sum and $25,000 monthly). Dan won legal custody of the four children, but had to give her visitation rights. After the divorce, she continued to threaten Dan and Linda (who married right after the divorce), leaving threatening telephone messages several times a day on their answering machine. On November 5, 1989, at 5:00 am, she drove to her ex-husband's house, and entered with a key she had stolen from her daughter. Finding them asleep in bed, she shot Linda twice and Dan four times, killing them instantly. A first trial resulted in a hung jury, but a second trial found her guilty of second degree murder, and she was sentenced to 15 years to life. Betty will be eligible for parole in 2011. (bio by: Kit and Morgan Benson)
