Funeral Services Held July 10 At Orange City

William A. Verdoorn, sr. of Orange City, died Wednesday morning, July 7. at the Verdoorn Nursing Home at Ashton. He had reached the age of 87 years, 1 months and 10 days.

Mr. Verdoorn suffered a stroke On July 1, 1953, which left his right side paralyzed. On July 6th 1954, he suffered another stroke at 7:30 a.m. to which he succumbed the following morning.

Mr. Verdoorn was born on May 27, 1867 at North Brabant, Netherlands, to Mr. and Mrs. Dick Verdoorn. At the age of 19 years he came to America with his parents, two brothers and one sister, all of whom preceded him in death.

On July 8, 1891, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Visser at Middleburg. Following their marriage they farmed east of Middleburg. In 1920 they retired from the farm and moved to Orange City.

Mr. Verdoorn was a member of the Grace Reformed church of Middleburg, later joining the first Reformed church at Orange City.

He is survived by four daughters and nine sons: Dick of Orange City; Jake at Seattle, Washington; Joe of Sheldon; Henry at Boring, Orgeon; Mrs. Annie Oldenkamp of Hospers; (Fannie) Mrs. John Oldenkamp of Hospers; Marie of Seattle, Washington; John of Orange City; Cornie, owner of the Verdoorn Nursing Home at Ashton; (Gertrude) Mrs. Louis Engeltjes of Orange City; William A. Jr. of Ashton; Bert of Sheldon and Anthony of Orange City; and forty-two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude, two daughters, one son, and a sister, Mrs. Klaas Van Diepen of Sheldon, and two brothers, Joost of Rock Valley and Cornelius of Sioux City.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 10, at 1:30 p.m. at the Anthony Verdoorn home in Orange City with Dr. H. Colenbrander officiating. Pallbearers were Wilbur Oldenkamp, Edward Oldenkamp, James Oldenkamp, John Oldenkamp, jr., William Verdoorn and Mitchell Verdoorn. Burial was made at the Middleburg cemetery.
