He was appointed as a member of the Delaware State Constitutional Convention in 1853 by Governor William Ross, then was appointed Secretary of State of Delaware by Governor Peter Causey and served from 1855 to 1859. During the Civil War he was commissioned as a Major of Volunteers, and served in the Volunteers Paymaster Department from February 19, 1863 to January 15, 1867, receiving a brevet of Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers for his service. In 1872 he was elected to represent Delaware in the United States House of Representatives, and served a single term from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875. (bio by: Russ Pickett)
