Eliza Ella Mc Bride's parents were Leroy Nelson McBride 1853 – 1920 and Lucy C Harris 1853 – 1911. Her siblings were Rosa Lee McBride1875 – 1960, she married Rev. William Lemuel Floyd Jr; Martha E McBride 1878 – 1949. she married Edward Wilson Maddox; John Calvin "Bud" Mcbride 1880 – 1968, he married Lena May Harris; Nora B Mcbride 1882 – 1912, Nora never married; William T McBride 1884 – 1885, little Billy only lived 2 months; Fannie C Mcbride 1888 –1975, Fannie married Charlie Arthur Maddex on Feb 14 1912; Jeston R McBride 1893 – 1897, Jeston passed away when he was only 4 years old; Effie V McBride 1895 – 1895, when Effie was 6 months old she passed away.
On Oct. 10, 1899 Eliza Ella Mc Bride married Peter "Pete" R. Courtney. They had six children: Edna Courtney 1901; Willie Courtney 1902 – 1902; Delphia Ruth Courtney 1904 – 1989; Gladys Tennessee "Tennie" Courtney 1907 – 1986, she married Herbert Lafayette Atkins; Basha Claria Courtney 1909; Fannie Queen Courtney 1912.
The census records revealed that after Pete ad Ella were married they were living in a house Pete grew up in. His father had died and his mother continued to live with him, and he was farming his father's land. By the Jan 8, 1920 census his mother, Kate Courtney, was still alive and 91 years old. She died the next month, Feb. 23, 1920. By the 1930 census Pete's widowed, 73 year old sister, Bettie, had joined the household.
The 1940 census revealed that Ella Courtney had completed the eighth grade of elementary school. She was 63 years old and an unpaid family worker. The road than ran in front of the farm where she had lived all of her married life had now been named Courtney Road. Pete declared that he owned his house and farm and his property was valued at $3000.00. Her three single daughters were still in the household. Delphia Courtusy was 35, Clarice Courtusy was 29 and teaching high school, Fannie Courtusy was 27 and teaching grade school. Pete's elderly 83 year old, widowed sister Bettie Courtney Lilly was still in the household. On April 27, 1943 Bettie past away.
The day before Christmas 1952, Ella, passed away. Her death certificate revealed that she died of bronco phenomena for 5 days, due to Hyperthermia, left Atherosclerotic cardio vascular desease that she had been suffering for 5 years. Her body was taken to the Homer Steward undertakers to be prepared for burial on the day after Christmas. Family and friends gathered at the Courtney Cemetery to bid their beloved wife, mother and friend farewell. (bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
