Rock Musician. A bass guitarist for the Canadian Rock group, 'Loverboy.' Along with Paul Dean, Matthew Frenette, Doug Johnson, Mike Reno, and Smith, the band was formed in 1980 in Vancouver, British Columbia. They recorded on the Columbia Records label, but met up with music producer Bruce Fairbairn and began recording on CBS Records. Fairbairn produced their debut album and they had hits with, 'Turn Me Loose' and 'The Kid Is Hot Tonite.' The album went platinum in Canada and the United States. In 1981, they recorded their second album entitled, "Get Lucky" also with Fairbairn as producer. It was again a big success in Canada and the United States thanks to the hit, 'Working For The Weekend' but it failed to gain an audience in Europe. At this time, they were also a popular attraction at AOR Stations across North America and a popular concert draw. In 1983, they released "Keep It Up" which featured the song, 'Hot Girls In Love' again with the help of Fairbairn. In 1985 though, they released the album, "Lovin' Every Minute Of It" with Tom Allom of 'Judas Priest' as producer. The album was alright, but it had an edgier side then there previous albums, and didn't do too great. In 1987, the band got Fairbairn back as producer and they released, "Wildside" and again this wasn't a huge success either. In 1989 after a two-year tour, the band returned to Canada and that same year, their greatest hits album entitled, "Big Ones" was released. Also that year, Reno and Dean announced they were leaving the group to pursue solo careers, which ultimately led to the break up of the band. In 1998, the band got back together and released the album, "Live, Loud and Loose." In 1999, tragedy began to strike the band when producer Bruce Fairbairn was found dead in his Vancouver home at the age of 49. On November 30, 2000, tragedy again struck when Scott Smith was out sailing his 37-foot sailboat, named the "Sea Major" along with two friends off the coast off San Francisco, California. He was up on top of the boat when a 25-foot wave knocked Scott and the ship's steering wheel into the ocean. Despite a massive search by the United States Coast Guard and his family, his body was never found. In 2009, he was posthumously inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame as a member of Loverboy.
