On Monday afternoon the people of Mayville were again inexpressibly shocked over the tragedy that befell one of the best known families of this vicinity. Emil C. Mann, for a number of years one of the milk dealers for Mayville, died shortly after noon from the effect of carbolic acid. He had been in town in the forenoon and upon arriving at home had partaken of the noon meal with his family. It was shortly afterward that he took the poison that ended his life so suddenly.

There was no apparent reason for the ghastly deed and there is therefore no comment to make. His family is plunged into deepest grief and all we can do is to extend sincerest sympathy to them in their great sorrow.

Emil Mann was born Feb. 14, 1869 in Williamstown, about one half mile south of his present home just south of Mayville. He was married Oct. 24, 1898 to Miss Maggie Hayes and seven children came to them. They are Clarence, Vera, Norbert, Viola, Leora, Earl and Ralph. He is also survived by his aged mother, six brothers and three sisters.

This afternoon at 2 o'clock the funeral will be held from the home to Graceland cemetery. Judge J. C. Karel of Milwaukee will deliver the funeral address. Deceased was a member of the Turnverein and the Modern Woodmen who will attend.

The sympathy of all is with the Mann family in this their darkest hour.

Mayville News April 27, 1916

On Monday afternoon the sad news spread in Mayville that the well known milkman Emil C. Mann, who lives a short distance south of Mayville, had taken carbolic acid shortly after lunch and so voluntarily set a goal for his life.

He had been in Mayville that morning, as usual, to make his rounds, which he ended; there was nothing special about him to be noted and he made no suggestion that he had something like thoughts of suicide in mind. He drove home at noon, and soon after dinner he did the swift act, plunging his family and loved ones into deep sorrow.

Emil C. Mann was born on February 14, 1869 to Mr. & Mrs. August C. Mann in the Town of Williamstown, half a mile south of his small dairy farm, and married Miss Maggie Hayes of Iron Mountain on October 24, 1898, who mourned his hasty death with seven minor children, four boys and three girls. The first names of the children, according to age, are Clarence, Vera, Norbert, Viola, Leora, Earl and Ralph.

He also left behind his elderly mother, Mrs. August C. Mann on the old home and six brothers as follows: Carl Mann of Mayville, Rudolf Mann at Randolph, August Mann of Stevens Point, Arthur Mann in the parents' home, Walter Mann of Fond du Lac, and Herbert Mann of Mayville. There are also three sisters, Ida Mann in the parents' home, Hermine, Mrs. Hermann Prinz of Mayville, and Marie Mann of Milwaukee.

We do not know anything about what induced the young man, who was still in his prime, to do the sad deed. Enough, it is a very sad thing and the bereaved are to be pitied in the highest degree.

He brought his age to 47 years, two months and 10 days.

The deceased was a member of Turnverein "Eintracht" and "Modern Woodmen", under whose auspices and participation the funeral took place yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house of mourning to Graceland cemetery. Many of his friends gave him final escort.

Counselor John C. Karel of Milwaukee gave the eulogy, and his six brothers served as pallbearers.

We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved and grieving relatives.
