U.S. Congressman. He attended Bel Air Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1829 and commenced to practice law in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates, (1838-40) and elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth Congress, serving (1845-47). Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was a United States district judge for the district of Maryland, from 1853, until his death at age 71.
