He enlisted in September 1862 in Company G, 43rd New York Volunteer Infantry, and was commissioned Captain and commander of the company as a result of his experience in the New York State Militia. Promoted to Colonel and commander of the regiment on May 12, 1864, after the Battle of the Wilderness, he was killed in General Jubal Early’s Confederate attack on Fort Stevens, one of the defenses surrounding Washington, DC, in July 1864.
