From "The Atlanta Constitution" July 13, 1897:
OWINGS--The friends and acquaintances of Mrs. H.A. Smith, Mrs. Bell Johns and Mr. J.R. Owings are requested to attend the funeral of their mother, Mrs. M. Owings, at her late residence, (?) Chestnut Street, at 11 o'clock on Tuesday morning.
**After finding a death certificate for her daughter (Anne Elliott Owings Smith), discovered Malana's maiden name was listed on the death certificate as "Helems" and her first name listed as Melaney. I have seen her name as Malinda, Melaney and Malana. The correct spelling of her maiden name is most likely "Hellams". Her name on the Confederate Widow's Pension Application is "Malana" and she signed as such.**
