Sally Trayer DeGan, 80, of Danvers, Mass., died Aug. 9, 2011, of kidney failure at the de Rham Hospice Home in Cambridge, Mass.
Sally was born in Williamsport, Pa., on Aug. 27, 1930, to John J. and Helen C. Trayer. She graduated from Wilson College in 1952 and worked for General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y., before serving as an Ensign in the Navy from 1954 to 1956 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va., where she met her future husband.
She married James J. DeGan on Nov. 26, 1955, and raised four children, two of whom had Down Syndrome. She was active in the School of Hope for disabled children in Williamsport and founded "Parents of Retarded Children" there in the 1960s.
After her family moved to Boxford, Mass., in 1973, she became involved in the La Salette Community in Ipswich, where she met members of L'Arche Irenicon, an organization that runs homes where disabled and non-disabled individuals live together in community. She was actively involved with Irenicon as a parent, volunteer and past President of the board until her death.
Her faith was very important to her and she made her Cursillo at St. Basil's in Methuen, Mass., in 1984. Her faith gave her the courage to choose to forgo dialysis and to look forward to seeing her family and friends who had passed before her.
An active golfer early in her life, she was the first member of her family to score a hole-in-one, eventually followed by her father and daughter.
She was incredibly proud of all four of her children. She is survived by her son, John "Jack" DeGan, his wife, Jackie DeGan and children, Emily and Tim of Topsfield, Mass.; her son, Thomas of Haverhill, Mass.; her daughter, Sally, her partner, Alison and son, Parker of Winchester, Mass.; her extended family in Pennsylvania and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband, James DeGan; her son, James DeGan Jr.; and her siblings, Helen "Judy" Johns, William C. Trayer and John C. Trayer.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (RTE 62) Danvers, Mass. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at St. Rose's Church in Topsfield, Mass. Burial will be in Williamsport, Pa., at Wildwood Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 22, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to L'Arche Irenicon at P.O. Box 1177, Haverhill, MA 01831 or at www.larcheirenicon.org.
