Abner B. and Anna Powell had 9 children: Two of his older sons moved to Nebraska and wrote urging their parents to move west. In November 1886, the Powell family left New Matamoras, Ohio by rail for Kansas. Abner rented a farm near Goddard, Sedgwick County Kansas. When they heard of the land rush, they loaded 2 wagons with bedding, clothing, cooking utensils, a stove and a few farm implements, and went to Hennessy, Oklahoma by the way of Caldwell, Kansas.
