French and Canadian officer, hero of the Seven Years War in America. Knight of the Royal and Military Order of Saint-Louis. Born in Québec, on February 24, 1731, he was the son of Nicolas-Marie Renaud d’Avesnes des Méloizes, lord of Neuville. As lieutenant of a company of grenadiers under the command of Denys de La Ronde in the Compagnies Franches de la Marine, he distinguished himself at the Battle of Carillon by his bravery and his leadership. On April 29, 1760, he died from the wounds he received during the day at the Battle of Sainte-Foy. Previous to that battle, General Lévis had recommended him for the Cross of Saint-Louis wich was later awarded to him posthumously. He is buried in the cemetery of the General Hospital of Quebec from which a part, called "Cemetery of the Heroes", became in 2001 the Memorial of the Seven Years War. (bio by: Guy Gagnon)
