Baker, Paul "Big John", 88, of Big Stone Gap, VA, passed away on Thursday (August 18, 2011) at his home.

He was born in Lee County, VA and lived most of his life in Big Stone Gap, VA.

He was a retired coal miner with the Westmoreland Coal Co., with over 30 years of service. He was a member of the U. M. W. A.. Mr. Baker loved to travel, fox hunt and coaching Little League baseball. He was of Baptist faith.

He will be missed by his family and all who knew him.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caregivers, Ann Adams, Melinda Clark, Corrine Mullins and to Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Scott Baker; his parents, John and Liza (Hurst) Baker; three sisters, Margaret Faye Fleenor, Irene Vernoy and Carrie Horne; and five brothers, Ed Baker, Hubert Baker, Albert Baker, Jess Baker and Earl Baker.

Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Retha (Estep) Baker; one daughter, Paula Christina "Tina" Dalton and husband Gary of Big Stone Gap; three sons, Dannie Darrel Baker of Richmond, VA, Tony Allen Baker and wife Sue of Morrow, OH, and John Tipton "Dickie" Baker and wife Leah of Mechanicsville, VA; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at American Legion Cemetery with Pastor Mike Dalton officiating.
