H. E. Varner Dies; Retired Local Grocer
Harley Edgar Varner, 76, of 532 Grandview avenue, a retired Zanesville grocer died shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday at his home following a stroke. He had been ill for six years.
He had been a resident of this city for 50 years and formerly operated the Varner Grocery Store at the corner of Ninth and Marietta streets. He was a member of the Market Street Baptist Church and had been church treasurer for 22 years.
Mr. Varner was born near Nashport Aug. 31, 1882, a son of Joseph and Dorothy Jane Claypool Varner.
He is survived by his widow, Helen Grace of the home, two sons, George R. of 510 Eppley avenue and Donald E. of Columbus; a daughter, Miss Helen Louise Varner of the home; a brother, George E. of Nashport; a sister, Mrs. Myron Cody of Pleasant Valley; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
The body was removed to the Hillis Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. Wednesday.
