Nell Kendrick

Nell Merwyn (Baugh) Kendrick passed from this life on August 16, 2011 to join her husband Alvin Kendrick, parents Jim and Lucy Baugh, and brothers Bob and Sam Baugh.

She is survived by daughters Karen Sorrells, Ellen Stevenson, and Mona Kendrick; grandchildren Missy Horvath, J.J. Stevenson, and Steve Stevenson; six great-grandchildren, and six nieces and nephews.

Born in Temple, Texas in 1916, Nell moved to Sweetwater when she was 15. Her father left the home after the move, and she worked after school at Woolworth's to help support her family. She eloped with Alvin in 1938. They raised their three daughters on a sheep and cattle ranch ten miles west of Sweetwater.

Nell was active in ministries at First United Methodist Church and served as superintendent of the children's department for many years. During the 1970's and 80's she worked at Sweetwater's Community Center, a social services agency. Nell took great satisfaction in serving seniors, women, and children through such programs as Meals on Wheels. She also sat on civic boards and committees in Sweetwater and volunteered at the city hospital. If there was community work to be done, you could always count on Nell.

Nell was an expert at bridge, crossword puzzles, and sports trivia. As the kid sister of football great Sammy Baugh, she grew up with a keen interest in sports: football, baseball, and golf. She was a sponge of sports statistics and rarely missed a game on the radio, and later, on television.

Known for her beauty, intelligence, integrity, and quick wit, Nell leaves a family who cherishes her. Not one to mince words, we always knew what she "really" thought. We will miss that honesty. What a lovely, spirited, and unique lady she was.

At 3:00 on Friday, Aug. 19, a memorial service to celebrate Nell's life will be held at the chapel of the First United Methodist Church, 503 N. Central Expressway, Richardson, TX.
