William Dixson Elrod died May 1980
William (Little Bill) Elrod 20, a well known Chatsworth resident, drowned last week in a lake at Mountain Lakes Golf and Country Club, where he had been golfing with friends.
Murray County Sheriff Charles (Judy) Poag said Elrod's death was accidental.
Elrod's body was discovered about 6 p.m.
Thursday shortly after he was supposed to have left the course to attend classes at Dalton Junior College.
Friends of Elrod's told Sheriff Poag that he left the Number Five hole around 5 p.m. later his friends said they saw his clothes where he had not changed for school and went looking for him.
The golf cart and his hat were found in the lake located on the club property.
Elrod's body was recovered in approximately three feet of the water. The body was found by Ray Sitton, Mike Fouts, Terry Ogles and Glenn Malone around 6 p.m., according to the sheriff's department.
His body was transported to Murray County Memorial Hospital by the Emergency Medical Technicians

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR Mr. William Dixon Elrod, 20, were held Sunday at 4 p.m, at the First United Methodist Church of Chatsworth with the Revs. Shelton Eubanks, Jr and Albert Bruce officiating. Burial followed in Murray Memorial Gardens. Mr. Elrod, better known as Little Bill, died Thursday as result of drowning. Survivors include his parents, Bill and Nettie Elrod of Chatsworth; aunts and uncles. Pallbearers were Chris Townsend, Tony Jones, Randy Beavers, Ronnie Leonard, Joel Etheridge and Jeffery Vick. Peeples Funeral Home of Chatsworth was in charge of arrangements.
