John Louis Cater was born August 26, 1882 in Wood County, Texas, son of John Smith Cater (1850-1943) and Martha Belle 'Mattie' Tolbert (1864-1934). On November 3, 1917, he married Ada Belle Powell (1897–1966) who was born October 26, 1897 in Celeste, Texas (Hunt County), daughter of Franklin Pierce Powell and Mary Jane Moore.
Louis and Ada had four children: Ruth A. Cater (1919-1989), Louis Eugene Cater (1924-1985), Leon John Cater (1927-1997), and unnamed daughter (1928-1928).
Ada died November 20, 1966 and was buried in Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County). Louis died December 15, 1967 and was buried beside his wife.
