John Smith Cater was born October 17, 1850 in Wood County, Texas, son of William Cater (1813-1872) and Matilda Roberson (1818-1858). The Tennessee State Marriages records show that William Cater and Matilda Roberson married in Williamson County, Tennessee on November 31, 1843.

The 1860 Federal Census for Precinct 8, Texas (Wood County) shows John Cater, age 8, born in Texas; living with his father, William, a farmer, age 47, born in South Carolina. Also living in the household were John's siblings, Mary A. Cater, age 14; and William M. Cater, age 12; both born in Alabama. In addition, William's mother, Nancy Cater, age 83, born in South Carolina was living with the family.

The 1870 Federal Census for Precinct 4, Texas (Wood County) shows John Cater, age 16, born in Texas; living with his father, William Cater, age 61, born in South Carolina; and Sophia, age 34, born in Mississippi. Also living in the household were John's siblings: Emeline, age 11; Sarah, age 8; Lewis, age 4; Margaret, age 2; and Obe, age 1 month; all born in Texas.

John first married Mary Burke and they had two children: Charles William Cater (1873-1961) and Ada Bell Cater (1876-1967).

John second married Martha Belle 'Mattie' Tolbert (1864-1934) and they had 9 children: Hattie Virginia Cater (1882-1969), John Louis Cater (1882-1967), Minnie Lee Cater (1885-1959), Maggie Cater (1888-1928), Vinnie Lee 'Betsie' Cater (1890-1970), Walker B. Cater Sr. (1894- ), Riley George Cater (1899-1931), Bert Cater (1899-1933), and Lola S. Cater (1901-1987).

The 1880 Federal Census for Precinct, Texas (Titus County) shows John S. Cater, age 27, born in Texas; and his wife, Martha B., age 20, born in Texas. Living with them were John's two children by his first marriage: William C. Cater, age 7; and Ada Bell Cater, age 5; both born in Texas.

The 1900 Federal Census for Precinct 4, Texas (Wood County) shows John S. Cater, a farmer, age 48, born October 1851 in Texas; and his wife, Martha B., age 43, born February 1857 in Texas. Living with them were their eight children: Lewis Cater, age 19, born August 1881; Hattie Cater, age 15, born July 1884; Minnie Cater, age 13, born December 1886; Maggie Cater, age 11, born September 1888; Vinnie Cater, age 9, born December 1890; Walker Cater, age 9, born February 1874; Riley Cater, age 4, born February 1896; and Bert Cater, age 2, born February 1898; all born in Texas.

The 1910 Federal Census for Durant Ward 2, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows John S. Cater, a farm hand, age 69, born in Texas; and his wife, Martha, age 54, born in Texas. Living with them were five children: Lewis Cater, a laborer of odd jobs, age 30; Walker Cater, age 15; Riley Cater, age 13; Bert Cater, age 11; and Lola Cater, age 9; all born in Texas.

The 1920 Federal Census for Durant Ward 3, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows John S. Cater, a common laborer, age 65, born in Texas; and his wife, Martha, age 50, born in Texas. Living with them were four children: Walker Cater, age 26; Riley Cater, age 21; Bert Cater, a printer for city paper, age 19; and Lola Cater, age 16; all born in Texas.

The 1930 Federal Census for Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows John S. Cater, age 78, born in Texas; and his wife, Martha, age 67, born in Texas. They were living in the home of their youngest daughter, Lola Cater, a coffee shop employee, age 26, born in Texas. Also living in the household were Lola's niece, Lucille Kelley, age 15, born in Oklahoma; and Lola's children: Margaret Cooney, age 10, born in Oklahoma; and Meece Cooney, age 5, born in Oklahoma.

Martha died February 16, 1934, in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried there in the Highland Cemetery.

The 1940 Federal Census for Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows John S. Cater, age 89, born in Texas. He was living in the home of his daughter, Vinnie Lee 'Betsy' Anderson, age 45, born in Texas; and her husband, Charlie Anderson, age 64, born in Illinois; and their children.

John died April 18, 1943 in Durant and was buried in Highland Cemetery beside his wife, Martha.

J. S. Cater, age 92, died at the family home at 301 East Arkansas on Sunday, April 18, 1943. The deceased was born in Wood County, Texas in 1850. Funeral services Monday at the Church of God, with burial in Highland Cemetery. Surviving are three sons, five daughters, 30 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
