Based on the 1850 census Major Townsend was a merchant in Bennettsville. In 1860 he is listed as a farmer and Bank Agent. In 1864 he accepted an appointment as "Depository" with promise of "liberal commissions" in order to exempt himself from service in the Confederate military. He applied for, and received, a pardon in October 1865. By the 1870 census he had moved his family to Society Hill where his occupation was listed as "planter". In 1880 his occupation was listed as "President, R. R. Co.".
