U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Son of Delaware's 10th Governor, Joshua Clayton, and cousin of U.S. Senator John Middleton Clayton. Served in Delaware State House of Representatives from 1802 to 1806 and from 1810 to 1813. Served in the Delaware State Senate in 1808 and was appointed the Secretary of State of Delaware by Governor George Truitt serving from 1808 to 1810. Served in the office of Delaware State Attorney General from 1810 to 1815. Elected as a U.S. Congressman to represent Delaware and served from March 4, 1815 to March 3, 1817. Was elected twice to serve in the U.S. Senate from Delaware and served from March 8, 1823 to March 3, 1827 and from January 9, 1837 to March 3, 1847. (bio by: Russ Pickett)
