French Philosopher, Author. Considered one of the leading exponents of the Enlightenment. Graduated in 1732 at the University of Paris, but devoid of a specialization, he practiced various jobs including that of private tutor. During the following decade he was the promoter and co-author of the "Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers." In 1773, Empress Catherine II invited him to St. Petersburg, and asked him to prepare plans to social reform and of the public education in Russia. The main theme of his writings concerns the philosophical and scientific origins of life, that is present at higher levels, as consciousness and thought. He was a prolific writer, but his works were almost all published after his death. (bio by: Lucy Caldarelli)
