COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Ruth Allen, 90, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17, from the chapel of Cookeville Funeral Home. Interment will be in Cookeville City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Allen passed away on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, in Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
She was born on May 2, 1921, in Jackson County to the late William Cook Allen and Manervia Rachel Mayberry Allen.
Mrs. Allen was a graduate of Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (TPI), now known as Tennessee Technological University (TTU), with a B.S. in education, giving her the opportunity to teach school in Jackson and Putnam counties for more than 47 years. Her life was her teaching ability and she spent more than 18 years teaching first grade.
She was of the Church of Christ faith and loved gardening, watching farm shows on television and the outdoors.
Her family includes four nephews, Wayne Allen of Cookeville, Terry Allen of Indiana, Steve Mayberry of Pleasant View and Paul Mayberry of Ashland City; three nieces, Paula Simmons of Cookeville, Kim Mayberry of Ashland City and Sarah Mayberry of Pleasant Valley; nine great-nieces and great-nephews; and one great-great-niece.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Allen; three brothers, Cecil J. Allen, Winters D. Allen and John W. Allen; and a sister, Elizabeth Mayberry.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Pastor Doyle Wilmoth will officiate at the services.
