Served during the Civil War as Major of the 47th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, a 9-month enlistment unit that was mustered in in October 1862 and mustered out in September 1863, having served in the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, XIX Army Corps in the Department of the Gulf. He was one of many Nothern politicians and Army officers who headed to the South after the end of the war as a "carpetbagger". He was elected to represent Mississippi's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1873 to 1875. After an unsuccessful bid to be re-elected (having been defeated by Guilford Wiley Wells for the seat), he moved to Chicago and became a member of a successful brokerage firm.
