Birth: Jun. 9, 1842
Raleigh County
West Virginia, USA
Death: Feb. 10, 1913
Raleigh County
West Virginia, USA

Austin Jeter was the son of Silas Hatcher and Permelia (Agee) Hatcher.

Austin married Sarah Walker Hatcher on April 18, 1865.

Austin and Sarah were the parents of:

1.Elizabeth F. Hatcher Richmond
2.Silas C. Hatcher
3.William C. Hatcher
4.Aaron Hatcher
5.Austin Council Hatcher
6.Mahala P. Hatcher Prince
7.Ida P. Hatcher Justice

Austin enlisted in the Confederate Army of the Civil War on June 8, 1861 in Wyoming County, Virginia and served in Co. G. 23rd Battalion of Virginia Infantry. Austin was 1st Corporal during most of 1863 and was promoted to 4th Sergeant on October 3, 1863. He was captured September 19, 1864 by General Sheridan's Union Forces at Winchester, Virginia. As a prisoner Austin was sent to Point Lookout, Maryland on September 23, 1864. Austin was held prisoner for about six months and then set free in a prisoner exchange on March 15, 1865 with 1000 Confederate soldiers.

Following his release, Austin apparently made his way home without incident and was married very soon after. Family descendants contend he was soon on his way back to rejoin the Confederate Army when he learned the Civil War was over.

Austin was elected surveyor of Raleigh County, West Virginia on November 8, 1892.

Sarah and Austin lived in two states and three counties and never left the same farm on Devils Fork near Egeria, West Virginia.

Austin Jeter, a cousin. I'm related to you on my dad's side as a Hatcher and on my mom's side as a Walker. Then you married Sarah Walker so maybe we're related 3 times. However it works out, thank you for being part of my family history.
