US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected as a Whig to represent Massachusetts' 8th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1827 to 1835. He was later elected as a Whig Senator from Massachusetts to the United States Senate, filling the vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator John Davis. He served from 1841 until his death in office in 1845.
