A native of Walton County, Dr. Brantley moved to DeKalb County and practiced medicine near Decatur about twenty years. He had lived and practiced in Atlanta the past forty years. A graduate of the old Atlanta Medical College, he was the son of Dr. Levi Gaines Brantley, of Walton County, Georgia.
Dr. William Alfred Brantley was the son of Dr. Levi Gaines Brantley and Martha W. Sturdivant. He was born in Walton County, Georgia - where a long line of Brantley's lived.
He married Virginia Susan "Susie" Sherrill of Spalding County, Georgia, about 1875. She was the daughter of Judge Joseph D. Sherrill and Sarah Ann Costler/Sherrill. They eventually divorced and he remarried to a woman almost 40 years his junior. She is buried in a different cemetery and died a few years before Dr. Brantley. He is buried beside his first wife.
They lived most all their life in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a doctor and father of eight children. Many of his uncles. his father and other relatives were also doctors. I have never seen so many doctors in one family. Beside being a medical doctor, he also practiced old time medical receipes.
William Alfred Brantley was my Great Grandfather. He died before I was born, so I never knew him or his wife. His son, Lawrence Sherrill Brantley, was my Grandfather.
All we have is a couple of pictures of him and his family. If you are kin to this family, please contact me.
