Daughter of John Short. (First Families of Alabama [Alabama Genealogical Society], #356.)
Some give the name of Cynthia Harton (Hawthorne) as John Short's first wife and the mother of Cynthia Short Yarbrough, while others give that of the second wife, Sarah Elizabeth Garrett, who married John Short in 1810.
First Families of Alabama accepts the second wife as Cynthia's mother.
If Cynthia Yarbrough was born in 1811, as she claimed in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, then she married at age fourteen to 21-year-old Reuben Yarbrough. From the documentation, this would appear correct. Whether she fibbed about her age later is not at present determinable.
Some family trees give her birth date as 1810.
Cynthia Short married in Fayette Co., Georgia, to Reuben Yarbrough, Sept. 25, 1825 (Fayette Co., Georgia Marriage Book 1825, page 36, marriage 77). She was his only wife, and they both died together at the same time, perhaps along with Emma Yarbrough, the daughter or granddaughter shown living with them in 1860.
