Bataan Elementary Memorial
Birth: unknown
Death: unknown

A school that memorializes the legacy of its namesake. Bataan Elementary School was named to honor the city's 192nd Tank Battalion, Company C which was captured intact during defense of the Bataan Peninsula during World War II. The men from this group endured a week-long forced march across 60 miles of swamps and unbearable terrain, battling to survive their Japanese tormentors. This small demoralized town, Port Clinton, Ohio with less then 5,000 inhabitants lost an extraordinary number of men in proportion to its population. The few that returned after the war soon died as a result of the treatment they had received. Long after tourism with Japan resumed, Japanese were issued a warning to refrain from visiting this area. Each Memorial Day, the students stage a service to remember and honor the school's namesake. The family from one of Company C soldiers, gave the school a flag they received after his death. It is flown every year during Bataan Day events. About 70,000 captured American and Filipino soldiers embarked on the Bataan Death March. Only some 50,000 lived to tell their tales of torture, disease, decapitation and death. (bio by: Paul S.)
