Ernest Hurst was the second of three sons of Monroe and Mary JANE Kneaves Hurst of Bloomington Township, Buchanan County, Missouri. He was a grandson of Armstead and Matilda Faris Hurst who came to Buchanan County from Kentucky in 1843 and established a 220 acre farm on the Old North Road halfway between DeKalb and Rushville.

Ernest's oldest brother died at the age of one year, and the younger brother - Michael Faris Hurst - died at 25 of diptheria. Ernest was killed when he was struck by an automobile on Highway 59 near Halls, Missouri. He is buried near his mother in the Armstrong Cemetery at Rushville, MO. His father and two brothers and grandparents are buried at nearby Westlawn Cemetery in DeKalb.

Sadly, according to St. Joseph Gazette newspapers from March 19 through 22, it took three days or more for cousin Ernie's body to be identified. The identification may have been my my great grandmother (and Ernie's aunt) Mollie Hurst - since she signed the death certificate as "informant."
