Monroe Hurst was the last of 11 children of Armstead and Matilda (Faris) Hurst who came to Missouri from Kentucky in 1842 and settled in Bloomington Township, Buchanan County, Missouri in 1843. Their farm home of 220 acres was on the Old North Road halfway between Rushville and DeKalb and, prior to the Civil War, the farm primarily produced hemp.

Monroe was married to Mary JANE Kneaves on Auguust 10, 1890. They had three sons: Mason, Ernest, and Michael Faris (Mason died at one year of age.)

Monroe was killed in an accident when he was dragged by a horse. He is buried at Westlawn Cemetery with his sons Michael and Faris, and next to his parents - Armstead and Matilda Hurst.

His wife, Jane, remarried to John M. Monson after his death. The Monsons lived in Clay County, but are buried in the Armstrong Cemetery at nearby Rushville, MO.
