In 1905 he was a blacksmith working in the Northern Pacific Railroad Shops.
Along with the historical research and writings of Anna Himrod, owner, editor and publisher of the Brainerd Tribune, and the recollections of Frank G. Hall, Ernest provided the information about the early days of Brainerd used by Zapffe in his book recounting the first seventy-five years of Brainerd's existence.
Was, allegedly, the oldest living man, in February 1946, who was born in Brainerd.

Life-Long City Resident, Dies
Ernest Henry Jones, 80, of 1005 Bluff, who was believed to be the oldest living native of Crow Wing county, died this morning at St. Joseph's hospital.
Born in Brainerd Oct. 1, 1873 he is believed to have been the 42nd white child born here.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p. m. in the First Congregational church with Dr. Howard Vernon officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday evening and Wednesday until 11 a. m. at Whitney funeral home and at the church from noon Wednesday until time of the services.
Mr. Jones was a blacksmith in the Northern Pacific shops for more that 50 years. He retired in 1946.
He is survived by his wife, Sophia; one daughter, Miss Margaret Jones of Alderson, W. Va.; one brother, Thomas of St. Paul and two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Wilson of St. Paul, and Mrs. Rita West of Salem, Ore. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 09 November 1953, p. 2, c. 2)
